Have You Heard of a “Credit Profile Number?” It’s a Fake Social Security Number

What Everyone Should Know About Credit Profile Number Scams

What is a Credit Profile Number?Never agree to buy or attempt to use a Credit Profile Number. You could go to jail.

Credit Profile Number scams target people with credit problems. Fraudsters claim to be able to “fix” bad credit by giving you a number that can be used in place of a Social Security Number.

What Is a Credit Profile Number?

This is a fake number that a criminal may sell to you, promising that it will allow you to get a credit card. There is no such thing as a legitimate Credit Profile Number. Every Credit Profile Number is fake. Using one may expose you to significant criminal penalties.

How Does a Credit Profile Number Scam Work?

Criminals claim to “fix” your credit by giving you a number that you can use in place of your Social Security Number on a credit application. Since your credit rating is tied to your Social Security Number, this “credit profile number” will allegedly allow you to open new lines of credit.

Attempting to conceal your identity or credit history by using a credit profile number on any credit application is a Federal crime. Bad credit will be the least of your problems if Federal investigators come after you, plus you’ll be out the money you paid for the Credit Profile Number.

How Do I Protect My Social Security Number?

If you haven’t done so already, create a My Social Security Account with the Social Security Administration. This is your first and best line of protection against someone using your Social Security Number illegally. There are specific options for blocking the use of your Social Security Number without your authorization, which provides broad protection against several kinds of identity theft.

Can Someone Steal My Identity with a Credit Profile Number?

A Credit Profile Number scam involves numbers harvested from breaches or generated by algorithms that are matched up with fictitious addresses and the names of the people targeted in these credit repair scams. The result looks something like this:

Your Social Security Number
Some Random Address
Fraud Victim’s Name

If the bank tries to verify any of the information, they will see that it does not match and throw it out. Fraudsters will stop using a number once it fails. Registering your number with a My Social Security Account guarantees that it will fail.

Even if you don’t have that protection, the odds are high that any fraudulent attempt to open lines of credit with your Social Security Number will fail. If fraudsters are successful, the suspect activity will be under someone else’s name. It is time consuming and expensive to untangle this, and you are likely to be considered guilty until you can definitively prove your innocence. Sign up for a My Social Security Account and avoid the hassle.

If your Social Security Number has been exposed in a breach, you should also strongly consider a credit monitoring service or get your free annual credit reports from Annual Credit Report. This site is completely free to use, and the information you get can help you detect any attempts to use your personal information.

Will a Credit Profile Number help me fix my bad credit?

A Credit Profile Number is fake. It will not help you repair credit and it violates Federal law. Anyone offering to sell you one or help you apply for credit with one is a criminal.

In our experience, dealing with one criminal just leads to visits from more of them. Avoid anyone offering quick credit repair or who promises to get you new credit cards with a Credit Profile Number.
